About the Author

Praveen Goday is a pediatric gastroenterologist at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and a professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is a recognized expert in nutrition and has authored > 50 research publications and ~40 book chapters. He has already served as editor of a book on Pediatric Critical Nutrition. He has served on the Board of the American Society for Parenteral Nutrition (ASPEN) and as the chair of the Nutrition Committee of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN). He is currently on the Committee of Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also the recipient of several national honors and awards including: ASPEN Excellence in Nutrition Support Education Award and the ASPEN Distinguished Nutrition Support Physician Service Award. He has been on the Best Doctors in America list continuously since 2007 and led the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Team to an ASPEN Clinical Nutrition Team of Distinction Award.

Cassandra Walia completed the coordinated program in dietetics at Mount Mary University in 2009, and earned her Master's of Science in Dietetics in 2012. Prior to working at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, she was a dietitian at the City of Milwaukee Health Department WIC clinics. She has worked in the outpatient GI and Allergy clinics at Children's Wisconsin (CW) since 2009 and supervises over 20 dietitians at CW. She is recognized as an expert within her field and has several publications. Cassandra has participated in a variety of quality improvement projects including creation of a nutrition lab protocol for patients with inflammatory bowel disease and improving the safety of our electronic medical record build for home parenteral nutrition. During her time at CW, Cassandra has represented Clinical Nutrition in a variety of multidisciplinary committees including the Patient Family Education Committee, Joint Clinical Practice Council, and the Food Allergy Huddle. She worked to create innovative electronic education for food allergy patients. In addition to her role at CW, Cassandra has served as an adjunct instructor at Mount Mary University, teaching graduate dietetics students and dietetic interns about pediatric nutrition.

Description: This book was created by a dietitian and physician to highlight the crucial symbiotic role each has when working with pediatric patients on nutrition goals.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide key information needed by dietitians (the authors elected to use this term instead of the full "registered dietitian nutritionist" or "RDN") to work with pediatric patients. It is also meant for students. While there are other pediatric books that have the same objectives, this book allows another option to choose from. This book is more aligned with basic knowledge, so the objectives for students are definitely met. Practicing clinicians would expect more detail.
Audience: This book is meant for students and practicing dietitians, but I see it more for students since it presents very basic knowledge. It also goes into great detail regarding the Nutrition Care Process (NCP), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' format for nutrition care. The authors state they are experts in their field, but they also acknowledge they are not experts in every topic, which led them to choosing additional chapter authors and reviewers. They all appear to be credible authorities on the topics they have been assigned based on their credentials and places of employment.
Features: The book is separated into chapters. Each chapter highlights its contents on the first page and then delves into the fine details of its topic, focusing on nutrition management using the Nutrition Care Process (assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and nutrition monitoring and evaluation). The "Nutrition Prescription" is also included in the Intervention section. Several chapters include "Common Nutrition Interventions," which are helpful to home in on the key information of the chapter but not all of them would be considered useful to practicing dietitians. The book also includes appendices including growth charts, Tanner staging, typical nutrition diagnoses for pediatrics, Dietary Reference Intakes, and examples of chart notes that coincide with Nutrition Care Process guidelines. I found the Tanner staging quite helpful since it includes graphics to explain how the various stages look in real life. The nutrition-focused physical exam chapter is very detailed and helpful, even though there are other incredibly useful references already available that focus solely on this topic. The enteral and parenteral nutrition chapters are quite enlightening and could be quite useful to nutrition students. The book is clearly best suited for dietitians since it focuses on the NCP in every chapter. However, it is not always used by dietitians since it is not a requirement for billing purposes and it does not always align with other healthcare professionals' documentation.
Assessment: There are quite a few nutrition and pediatric books available and I would certainly choose those over this book for practicing clinicians. However, this is a nice option for dietetic students as well as pediatricians.
